What impact did the Dodo becoming extinct have on the eart

Interesting question - my first thoughts were similar to the preceding - then I googled ''dodo ecology''. I wondered if the dodo filled any important ecological role & did it is extinction effect any other species.

Much to my delight I found an article that mentioned a scientist is 1977 study. He found that a tree (the tambalaoque) on the dodo is home island (Mauritus in the Indian Ocean) was dependent on the dodo. He suggested that it has tough seeds that will not germinate unless a dodo first eats the seed & the poops them out. He further stated that no new tambalaoque trees have sprouted since 1681 (the last of the dodo).

A year later another scientist proved him wrong - his sample size was too small. Indeed younger trees existed & the seeds could sprout on they own.

What then was the impact of the dodo? The theory & it is undoing strengthened science & shows how science works. ''A beautiful theory can be killed by a nasty, ugly little fact.'' However the idea of interdependence of species is valid in many other cases.

Also the dodo is extinction is one of the first ''famous'' extinctions reminding us humans that we have the capacity to wipe out entire species. We r altering the course of evolution.

Personally I miss the dodo.

None. As is the case with any single species going extinct.

What impact did the Dodo becoming extinct have on the eart

There were no more Dodos

Hardly any. A population of flightless birds on a small island in the Indian Ocean is not exactly a keystone of the global ecosystem. Its loss would've made some difference or other to the ecosystem of the island and, of wider significance, meant visiting sailors had to look elsewhere for fresh meat.
